  • Beargrease, nws, lynn, 1.-The 28th running of the John Beargrease sled dog marathon. Mushers from all over north America including 5 teams from Wisconsin race in the annual Beargrease. The sled dog race is a marathon from Deluth MN through some of the most beautiful and rugged wilderness in North America the Boundary Waters. Fans of the race winter camp along the trail cheering and supporting their teams. <br />
The race is a tribute to Native American John Beargrease who grew up in the region. For almost twenty years, between 1879 and 1899, John Beargrease and his brothers delivered the mail between Two Harbors and Grand Marais. With the limited equipment available and loads weighing as much as 700 lbs. The trip was made once a week…an incredible feat for one man to accomplish especially when you consider the constant range of altitude along the shore. Photo by Tom Lynn/TLYNN@JOURNALSENTINEL.COM
